Actresses are being lauded for pushing their supposed undesirability to the extreme, and it’s redefining how we see women.
I loved this essay on the depiction of “ugly women” in movies, and their current acceptance in Hollywood. I don’t entirely agree with the writer on the depiction of ugliness in Black women, not because the writer is wrong but because she leaves out certain societal aspects of their depiction. At any rate there’s an entire essay, in there somewhere, on the depiction of “ugly” and “pretty” Black women onscreen. I may have to be the one to write it.
