Pop Culture Links

Here’s some links to various articles on movies, and television, that I thought were pretty interesting. Not all of these were written this year but that doesn’t matter because a good article stands the test of time.

*This article is a devastating takedown of  White Pop Culture’s obsession with B.B.D. Moving from slavery, to Birth of A Nation, to today’s latest  dating apps, the writer discusses America’s centuries long obsession with trying never to notice the Black dick.

*This article discusses why female superheroes have almost nothing to do with feminism, and everything to do with White male fantasies.

Female Superheroes Are Not Necessarily Feminist Heroes

*Using Westworld as an example, this outlines why we need  new approaches to entertainment, outside of the current power fantasies, that drive so much of the motivation behind our movies and TV shows. A motivation that is often based on more and more extreme violence, and more extreme forms of sex.

*These two are from BattyMamzelle, a blogger who spits hot fire on intersectional feminist issues. Here, she discusses  the erasure of WoC from fantastical, heroic, and dystopian narratives.

*Yet another interpretation of the movie It Follows which, like its monster, can take on many different forms, and is open to many viewpoints.

*I think this post is especially relevant in light of the Fascist backlash against the movie Rogue One. One wonders just how long we’re going to have to put up with this level of nonsense, every time a movie gets released that doesn’t center a straight white man in its narrative. Also, I’m a huge fan of Laurie Penny, so please go read the rest of her articles, scattered all over the internet.

This is about how outdated James Bond is as a heroic character.

*I’m always up for some Hannibal series meta. This one is about how the three main characters intersect from a socio-economic viewpoint.

*Cassandrashipsit gives the lowdown on how NOT to be an ally. This person, like BattyMamzelle, will come for your edges, if you test her.

*This review of Ravenous perfectly outlines why I love this movie so much.

*I don’t think I’ve made any secret about my distaste for the movie Prometheus, and my utter hatred for the writer, Damon Lindelof, who has written what are, quite possibly, some of the dumbest scientists to ever be brought to a movie screen. Here, Chris Brecheen outlines exactly why this movie is so detestable.
