Back in August 2015 I wrote โ€œDear Comic Fans: We Get it. Youโ€™re racist and racebending scaresย you,โ€ as a direct response to the racist backlash towards Keiynan Lonsdale being cast as Wally West on the Flash television show.

Well, itโ€™s been a little bit over a year and I honestly can tell you that yes, fandom is still filled to the brim with racists who think that if they scream about red hair and โ€œblackwashingโ€ loud enough, that no one will notice that the only time they know or care about changes to charactersโ€™ races when it concerns white characters being cast with actors of color.

Look, if the only thing you care about when it comes to casting is an authentic hair color, then I have to introduce you to the wonders of hair-dye and wigs. And then I get to beat you with a bag fullโ€ฆ

Now I am no expert, but was there a lot of diversity in the superhero area in the comics “back in the day “? If not, then would it not stand to reason that casting someone of colour for a hero that was created 40-50 years ago is just a case of wanting to bring a character to life and it just happens that the best actor for the role isn’t white?

    1. Indeed. As was said about Candice Patton, the actress who plays Iris West on The Flash. I’ve seen her interactions with Grant Gustin on the show, and their chemistry is unmistakable. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the two of them are developing a real world relationship.

Also I think some of these fans need to get used to the idea. The film industry is losing a lot of money, every year. One of the ways they can gain audiences is to give some of us what we’re asking for, which is more diversity and inclusion, for which they will be handsomely rewarded, with lots of our dough.I suspect all this racebending and genderswapping is going To go on for quite some time, as long as they’re making money off of it.

      1. Oh, don’t be mistaken. I’ve heard that Black cosplayers get a lot of hate, and harassment. So yeah, some people are bigots no matter where they are, or what the context. They don’t want PoC doing anything anywhere, I guess.

The issue comes down to people having one vision and heaven help us if we should deviate from it. Colour, weight, gender…they are get put under the microscope. Sad really.
