Geeking Out About : The Unexpected Tearjerker

I’m not a person who cries easily, but I can be caught off guard. I’m not a person who watches romances, as I have absolutely no patience for their tropes but I can be moved by grand romantic gestures of faith and loyalty or awe in other films that I never expected to need tissues for.

Since this is a blog about celebration of Geek Culture, I’d like to give a shoutout to the creators who try their damnedest to move you, shake you, engage you, infuriate you or, fill you with awe.

And sometimes,  just make you totally lose your shit.

The Lord of The Rings film: I think  this is the only action movie, ever made,  that had me bawling  like a child by the end.

Toy Story 3: the whole darn thing. Started crying in the first fifteen minutes.

Wall-E: The Ending

Star Trek:The Wrath of Khan: You know the scene

The Dawn of the Dead remake

The Host: The Ending

The Fly: The Ending

Fright Night : The death of  Evil Ed.

and of course:

The Shawshank Redemption: all of the last fifteen minutes.

Also a special honorable mention goes to the one TV show with the most consistent tearjerker episodes: Buffy the Vampire Slayer  this show made me cry more often than any other show on television. It was just that good.

  1. About two decade ago, the movie that hit me the most was My Life with Nicole Kidman and Michael Keaton. Keaton’s character is dying and about halfway through the movie, his father begins to save his son (Michae’s character). I don’t know why it hit me so hard back then, but it really is a gripping scene. Very personal.

    1. Oh, well see. I try to steer clear of movies where somebody is dying, because I just know I’m going to need tissues. There’s at least the expectation that there might be tears later.
These were movies where I had no expectation, at all, that I would be crying. I walked into these all wide eyed and happy and walked out blubbering like I’d lost my best friend. Toy Story 3 is especially guilty of this.

” You bow to no one.”

Gets me too, but not as much as the Sam quote!

Toy Story 3 also got me really good at the end!

Uhg the LOTR-I can’t even repeat the phrase-I can’t carry the ring but….without tears! When Dean used it on SPN I lost it! What a sap!

    1. Hey, I wasn’t supposed to publish this one yet.

I’m good for tearing up at that scene, too.

But the one line from LOTR that always catches me:
” You bow to no one.” – Aragorn, to the Hobbits at the end of the film, and then everyone bows to them.
